When we were in Turkey recently several people we talked with had the sense that the large Turkish population in Germany had, after emigration, failed to "progress" socially in the same way that Turkey has been, resulting in a far more traditional/conservative/Turkocentric Turkish population in Germany than in Turkey itself! I think it's easy to take for granted in America that we can talk freely about the genocides that we have perpetrated, or criticize our own country in any other we want (generally) without serious threat or consequences, and that (for the most part) we no longer consider the “honor” of our country/family/religion/bowling team to be of a higher value than human life.
Exactly, Jesse. That's one freedom I hope never to lose. Though I have heard more people say in the past 6 years things to this effect: "Oops, don't let someone hear me criticize the Bush administration or I might find myself in jail..." scary.
